Redesign and Additions
Savannah, Georgia
23,000+ Completed Square Feet
$1.5 Million
2006
The project involved extensive renovations and upgrading to the original 19,000 square foot center built in the 1970's. A new 4,200 square foot front addition gives the appearance of a new structure.
The renovation and expansion project included an exterior makeover and expansion of the existing facility. The addition included space for a new library, meeting area, computer center, a crafts room and improved handicapped accessibility.
The Center is named for the late W.W. Law, a Savannah civil rights leader and historian who stressed the importance of Savannah's neighborhoods during his life. An exhibit hanging inside the Center tells the story of the evolution of the surrounding Benjamin Van Clark neighborhood and the people who have populated it through the years. The Benjamin Van Clark neighborhood is located on Savannah's Eastside, considered a blighted area for which the center will be a catalyst for reviving.
The center provides a safe haven for youth as well as seniors. Mayor Otis Johnson said, "“We must personify this vision of serving citizens from early childhood to the senior years."
